Penguin Books South Africa is looking to appoint a Commissioning Editor to join our South African publishing division.
Key responsibilities
- help build a strong non-fiction and fiction list
- initiate and commission non-fiction books in a range of genres
- edit and proofread manuscripts to the highest standards
- build strong relations with authors
- steer editorial processes within schedule and budget
- commission freelancers and uphold quality of all editorial work
- develop and put into effect house rules, and advise on matters of language
- write promotional and book cover copy
Requirements
- a BA degree or higher with English as a major and at least 5 years experience in book editing
- an eye for detail and a penchant for accuracy
- impeccable knowledge of the English language and a good grasp of Afrikaans
- excellent written and verbal communication skills
- excellent organisational skills
- to be well read and to display a broad general knowledge of trends and current affairs, particularly in relation to Africa andSouth Africa
- a sound knowledge of South African fiction
- to be able to work independently, under pressure and without supervision
- to be adaptable to change
- to be a team player and have excellent people skills
- to be open to feedback and display willingness to learn
- to be a self-motivated, dynamic and innovative individual with excellent leadership, communication and management skills
