The African Bird Fair is back!

Join BirdLife South Africa for the biggest event in African birding this year: The African Bird Fair 2022.

 

Taking place on 22 and 23 July 2022, expect a jam-packed programme of exciting speakers, a plethora of exhibitors, and even some educational workshops on birding identification. Plus, there’s the opportunity to connect with other avid birders across the continent, and the world.

This year, they’ll hosting a hybrid event, meaning the entire programme will be available virtually, but you’re also welcome to attend the event in-person at their head office in Johannesburg at Isdell House in Dunkeld (on the 23rd of July only).

Most of the Fair is free to attend, but please note that you will need to register by ‘purchasing’ a General Admission ticket as platform capacity is limited.

 

Here is a taste of what to expect …

 

1. General Admission

Cost: FREE

Presentations include:

  • A global systematic review of the temporal and spatial patterns of organochlorine pesticide monitoring in raptors – Kailen Padayachee
  • Evolving challenges and approaches to bird species conservation in Africa – Dr Paul Kariuki Ndang’ang’a

  • Let’s talk about the birds and the bees in the city – Dr Chevonne Reynolds
  • Pink love: blood and bludgeoning Lesser Flamingos – Tania Anderson
  • Birding Gabon, from River Martins to Fishing Owls – Dr Callan Cohen
  • Birding Mozambique – Birding off the beaten track – Dylan Vasapolli
  • Kenya’s iconic birds and big game – Dr Daniel Danckwerts
  • The State of South Africa’s Birds – Christopher Shortland

  • Saving Marion Island’s Seabirds – Dr Anton Wolfaardt
  • Bird of the Year: Cape Gannet – Christina Hagen
  • Sparrows and the City – Sage Naidoo
  • Hornbills of Africa – Dr Lucy Kemp

 

All presentations can be attended online over both days, or consider popping in at BirdLife South Africa's beautiful headquarters at Isdell House in Johannesburg (on the 23rd only) to connect with their team, meet their partners and sponsors, enjoy art exhibits, browse their Shop for the Birds!, or enjoy their flourishing indigenous garden. Isdell House is located at 17 Hume Road, Dunkeld West. 

 

Bring your Swarovski or ZEISS binoculars and scopes for a clean, come and get to know the BirdLife South Africa team, and take a walk around their flourishing indigenous garden.

 

2. Keynote Lectures

Cost: R100 each

The esteemed speakers are:

  • 22 July 2022 @ 19:00 (GMT+2): Jonathan Franzen in conversation with Jenny Crwys-Williams and Mark D. Anderson
  • 23 July 2022 @ 17:00 (GMT+2): Dr Samuel Temidayo Osinubi - Intra-African migration: a look at the Woodland Kingfisher

 

3. Workshops

Cost: R100 each, or R250 for all three
